Today, Hart House is a centre for experiential learning outside of class, but when it opened in 1919, it was a male-only space, a status-quo even endorsed by then Senator John F. Kennedy when he was invited to speak in 1957 (as reported in the Star at the time). Protests by faculty and students, along with shifting societal norms, forced change, and the ban on women fully ended only in 1972. Step into the Great Hall and you will immediately feel like you’re in a Harry Potter movie and at a Candlelight concert it has all of the enchantment of a Hogwarts ball. It has the same Collegiate Gothic style that feels very European, exactly like Christ Church College in the UK (actual set).

The Great Hall
This committee oversees concerts and events of various types of music, including rock, reggae, and folk. Throughout the school year the committee organizes six to ten concerts. The committee's aim is to bring the entire music community together from all campuses. These events are considered a "must see" for all first year students. There’s plenty to do at Hart House including events that appeal to those who love art, culture, and expanding intellectual horizons. You can visit exhibitions on music, from those focussing on the war in Ukraine to another that takes a deep dive into Toronto’s hip-hop history.

The Permanent Collection is on view throughout Hart House and the historic core of the Collection is in constant demand by major exhibitions throughout the world. Hart House provides resource spaces for students to study and work between labs/classes. Rooms are WiFi-enabled, allowing students to do online research for assignments or attend online classes. There will be no access to parking on Tower Road or Hart House Circle. For more information about parking on U of T campus, please visit the Parking Services website. There are two accessible entrances and exits at Hart House, one located at Tower Road and one on Hart House Circle, the southeast double doors at the Founder's Prayer. In addition to the two accessible entrances/exits, the south doors east of the Arbor Room entrance on Hart House Circle are also available for use. As an undergraduate, Vincent Massey read history and English at University College in the University of Toronto, and then completed graduate studies in history at Balliol College, Oxford. Upon his return to Canada, he sought to bring a unifying, communitarian spirit to the highly independent colleges of the University of Toronto, inspired by the social and recreational life that he observed at Oxford's colleges. Massey, who in 1908 had become a trustee of his family estate, offered to establish a structure devoted to extracurricular activities at the university, an idea that was embraced by the university's governors.
The grand interior of the House features high arched ceilings that vary from room to room. Uniquely designed fireplaces and well-tread wood floors add warmth to the House’s common rooms. As an integral part of the University of Toronto’s cultural landscape since 1919, Hart House is a peerless institution in its history of inspiring change, provoking thought and helping to shape artistic, cultural and social tapestry of the University and larger communities. In the autumn of 1979 the music committee and CBC Toronto marked the 60th anniversary of Hart House with a series of four concerts featuring the Hidy-Ozolins-Tsutsumi Trio, Lois Marshall and Greta Kraus, Adrienne Shannon, and the Elmer Iseler Singers with the Toronto Brass. It was also the location in 1981 of the COMUS Music Theatre presentation of Graham George's opera A King for Corsica. Hart House's facilities include the Great Hall located in the East Wing which functions as an event venue, conference centre, and concert hall and houses a Steinway grand piano. The Music Room in the West Wing also boasts a grand piano, and is used for smaller concerts, lectures and events. The Theatre with its proscenium arch is located underground, and there is a large fitness/athletics complex. Besides other rooms for meetings and student use, Hart House houses an Art Gallery, and owns a farm located in Caledon used for retreats and recreation.
Born in Toronto and raised in Mississauga, Hopkins, a fourth-year student at the Ontario College of Art and Design University (OCADU) has mixed roots, hailing from the Batchewana First Nations near Sault Ste. Marie, and the Métis community of St. Paul in Manitoba on his mother’s side. He is also English on his father’s side, having ancestors who immigrated to Canada in the 1940s. By the mid-1960s the theatre joined the world of academia with the creation of the Graduate Centre for Study of Drama. A new generation of students combined dramatic literature with practical theatre experience and learned from and contributed to the vibrant Toronto theatre scene of the 1970s.

Candlelight concerts at The Great Hall
The tournament will be hosted at the historic, neo-gothic building, Hart House, at the University of Toronto. Hart House is regarded as one of the world’s most beautiful student centers and is a visual icon of the University of Toronto. The grand interior of Hart House is designed with high arched ceilings that vary from room to room. On an annual basis the Orchestra runs two concerto competitions, one internal (open to HHO membership) and one external (open to the community).
With approximately 717 works, the collection spans various forms, reflecting the sheer breadth of Canadian art. Beyond its cultural significance, the collection serves as an educational resource to visitors. The Conservatory String Quartet gave performances on the Hart House Viols, a chest of six viols purchased ca 1930 by the Massey Foundation and the Arts and Letters Club.
The ceilings in the corridors and many rooms such as the Upper Gallery of the Great Hall are vaults with ridge ribs, but of particular emphasis is the treatment of the library ceiling that uses decorative Lierne ribs, which can also be seen in the entrance vaults. The general shape of the frontispieces and what appear to be Tudor-like archways mirror the shape of the chimney arches, while the decorative cinquefoil shapes used for the windows can also be seen in the woodwork of doors and trusses. The main entrance on the south side, the entrance on the west side, and the entire east wall is treated with a Perpendicular style parapet of battlements. The Gothic nature of the structure is emphasized through the structural systems, layout, and ornamentation, while the weight of stone is de-emphasized through its decoration, and its contrast with the thin stained-glass windows.

The viols became the sole property of Hart House in 1935 (see Instrument collections). Their use was restricted to experienced 'string musicians for rendering music appropriate to them'. They were used by the Toronto Renaissance Quintet, led by Wolfgang Grunsky, and by the Hart House Consort, led by Peggie Sampson. The viols, still owned by Hart House in 1990, were not in playing condition.
