This U of T landmark might not be the only Canadian establishment learning of a new naming conflict, as a Burnaby B.C. The name of a beloved Toronto building is buzzing on social media this week, all because of a famous, pint-sized American comedian and actor. Hopkins says he’s sick of apocalyptic and dystopian outlooks on life that often place Indigenous peoples in a negative light, so he began asking himself how he can make people feel good when looking at his art. Hopkins isn’t only moving Hart House into the 21st century with the messaging of his art, but with the use of technology as well, in the form of augmented reality. “If you point your phone at the mural, an eagle comes out of the star world and flies around the room.” Using Meta’s augmented reality (AR) technology, one can scan a QR code next to the mural, which will then open the Instagram app’s camera. The idea for the mural came to Hopkins while he attended that powwow at Fort York with his grandmother and sisters.

Ribbed vaults and pointed arches crown intricate woodwork and stonework with gorgeous stained glass windows that illuminate bronze chandeliers. But before that official opening, during the First World War, the building was used as a training and rehabilitation facility for soldiers. Hart House celebrates its 100th birthday today, but the building has served as a focal point at the University of Toronto – and, indeed, the city – for more than a century. In 1995 a decision was made to restore and conserve these instruments, and on 20 May 1999 an unveiling ceremony took place at the Gallery Grill (antechamber to the Gallery Lounge).

The Great Hall at Hart House is not only one of the oldest student centres in the world but its architecture is like something straight out of Harry Potter. This magical room is a feast for the eyes, featuring spectacular, soaring stained glass windows, an ornate wooden ceiling, gorgeous inscriptions, and now breathtaking Candlelight concerts. Designed by the Toronto architects Henry Sproatt and Ernest Rolph, and located on the University of Toronto's St George campus, this gift to the university from the Massey Foundation opened 11 Nov 1919.
The organization, renamed the Hart House Debating Club, has ever since been the primary speech and debating society at the University of Toronto open to all students from all colleges and campuses. Close to the Romanesque-building style, Gothic, or Gothic-revival style uses stone masonry to build. The use of rocky dark sandstone and limestone materials contrasted greatly with the smooth brick lining inside, the pointed-arch shape dominating the windows and doors and hallways. The porch is another Gothic-revival element that architect Henry Sproatt added, a protected space in front of the main entrances for people to hide in case of bad weather. The addition of decorated wooden arch-braces and ceilings act like an acoustical amplifier for the Hart House Orchestra. Since 2008, the venue has hosted two of the largest annual Toronto chess events, the Hart House Holidays and Hart House Reading Week Open Chess Tournaments, regularly attracting over 200 players.
Sunday afternoon concerts featuring accomplished artists have continued the tradition in the Great Hall. Student and professional musicians have given informal noon-hour and afternoon recitals in the music room and the east common room. All students at the University of Toronto are members of Hart House, and alumni of other universities may join for a fee. Activities at Hart House have been co-ordinated by committees of students, graduates, and faculty, and by various clubs, all of which report to the Board of Stewards chaired by the warden of Hart House. The land on which the building exists was close to the McCaul's pond, which was buried along with Taddle Creek in 1886. Nurse scored her third goal with an assist from Spooner 54 seconds into the final period for her first career hat trick. The Art Museum at the University of Toronto is one of the largest gallery spaces for visual art exhibitions and programming in Toronto. Charles Vincent Massey (BA 1910 UC) was chairing two student clubs and working for three U of T newspapers in 1910 when he saw an opportunity to forge links across faculty and college rivalries.
